What does my child need to bring to Pre School / Kindergarten?

For our Day School programs, children must bring their own packed lunch, a thermos for their drink, a complete change of clothes (which you can leave at school in their cubby hole), nappies / diapers if your child is not toilet trained, an old t-shirt for art activities, an apron for cooking and a cap or hat in the summer for outside activities.

Do Pre School and Kindergarten children get the chance to play outside?

Yes. We feel it is vital for NWIS children to have the opportunity to venture outside and explore different environments. Every day ( weather permitting), we walk to a local park (donning our NWIS jerseys), so that the children become familiar with their geography, and can try playing on swings, climbing frames, slides and sand boxes. We also actively bring to their attention all that is around them, with the aim of heightening their natural sense of curiosity.

Do children get homework?

We try to encourage parents to work with us in their child's development, and we issue them with a monthly newsletter which details what we will be covering in class. Parents can choose to talk about or do activities which correspond with what their children are learning.

Does NWIS have a Parent Teacher Association?

Yes. All parents must join the PTA, where three parents are elected every year to be Parent Teacher Representatives (PTR). They are responsible for organizing some events and to maintain effective communication channels between the parent body and the school.

Can we park our cars at the school?

No. You can drop-off and pick-up your children form the school, but we do not provide long term parking. There is a car park in front of Queens Isetan, which can be used, although there may be a charge.

What if we don't speak English?

We are an international school, and as such, our curriculum is mostly taught in English, the international language of communication. Although we have Japanese speaking staff, we encourage parents to communicate with us in English as our Head Teachers are native English speakers. In order to facilitate your child's language development, it is important that one, or both parents can understand English, so that they can help their children outside of the classroom with any English language queries. This ties-in with current theories on bilingual education, and it will be extremely difficult to expect your child to become bilingual, if the two languages are not spoken at home.
